cannot save a new default pivot table style

I'm having two problems with pivot table styles.

First, I want to save a new default pivot table style for use in all workbooks. I have tried right-clicking on the style on the Pivot Table Tools - Design tab and selecting Set as Default, and it just doesn't work.

Second, is something I've done once before but can't seem to do again. You can take a look at the attached .jpg (sensitive info removed) to see it. It's a combination of features that I can do separately but not together.

I want to make a pivot table style that has:

    1. Left and right borders that stay on subtotal columns no matter how many columns are being added together. You can see there are two columns, May and Jun, and a subtotal for Q2. Then there are three columns, Jul, Aug, Sep, and a subtotal for Q3. Only the subtotals have left and right borders.

    2. A colored background for the row labels portion of the pivot table. You can see Account Name, Margin, and Margin % all have a slate blue background instead of the default white.

    3. A white background for the values portion of the pivot table. I keep having the problem of making this part the same color as the row labels portion when I fix that setting for #2.

Today I can do any of those things separately, but not all together. This is especially frustrating because I did do it all together once before.

Re: cannot save a new default pivot table style

Alright, I figured part of this out...

The formatting problem seems to be a matter of putting a background color on the Whole Table, selecting 'Banded Columns', and setting the First Column Stripe and Second Column Stripe as shaded white with no borders.

I still would very much like to know how to save one style as the universal default for all pivot tables in excel 2007.
