    Defining cell as text

i need to define a cell as text. How can this be done? The reason for this is because if I type 001 in a cell it will automatically turn that into 1. Also this formatting would need to be copyable. So if I copy and paste that cell template and put in say 002 it would still read 002

You could use a Custom Format of: 000
ie entering 1 will be presented as 001

Nah, that won't work. What i need is for it to like think that it's text or something. This is for where someonew enters a name. A lot of the time that name is eg. 001 but it could also be: 1, 01, 0001 or anything else

So not format as text. But like think it's a piece of text instead of a number. I dunno ow to explain it. What i need is for the 001 to not default to 1. I had thought of stuff to do with text but anyway. Is there a way to make a cell not turn eg. 001 to 1?

Yes format the cell as Text (?!)

By setting the cell format to Text XL simply reads everything entered into it as a text string...
so entering 001 into a cell formatted as Text is the same as typing in '001 into a cell formatted as General etc... as far as XL is concerned 001 is not a number.

Highlight the cells you will want to be treated as Text press CTRL and 1 -> set to Text -> click OK.
