Time verse Date and Time verses Hours

I'm stumped....I'm trying to do some math in excel but excel sees my cell value as time, and I want it to see it as hours and minutes.

For example, I have in cell A1, for example, 20:45. Excel sees this as 8:45 PM. I want it to see this as 20 hours and 45 minutes. I've changed the formatting to h:mm, [h].mm and others but nothing seems to be working.

What I'm attempting to do then is devide that number, 20:45 to get 10:22.

Make sense? Any help/suggestions would be great...!

If you multiply A1 by 24 and format as General you will get 20.75 which is 20 and 3/4 hours... then you can divide by whatever...
Where there is a will there are many ways.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you tell me why, when I do the formula, that I get 11:00. I check the format of the cell and it's Time. I change that to General and then I get 20.75. Why does it keep flipping back to time?
