    Special formatting

    Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help me?

I have a spreadsheet which I use for a staff register. I have a list of names down the side, then the dates for a month. I mark whether each member is either 'p' present, 'A' absent, 'al' annual leave, 's' sick or 'o' off. What I what is a formula that counts the numbers of each letter (A,s,al,o) in a column at the side automatically when entered in the cell.

    Is this possible

    Many thanks

    Hi Maybelle,

Thank you so much, it works. I did try countif but obviously had everything the wrong way round. You helped a great deal, so quick once you know how.

Next question do you perhaps know how to get excel to give the cell a colour automatically. For instance, when I type an 'A' in a cell, I would like the cell to go red, so that every time I type 'A' for absence it goes red automatically.

    Many thanks

    Hi,

Conditional formatting (Format>>Conditional formatting). Excel 2003 restricts the amount of conditional formatting to 3 though. (2007 allows more)
