Question Changing data in multiple files

Totally new to excel and not sure what or how to ask but here goes:

I have a number of templates (currently totaly seperate of each other) I use which have the same data in the same location on each template. Is it possible to change the data on one template and have the data change on all templates?

    Thank you for you help

Re: Changing data in multiple files

    Hi,

when you say templates, do you mean .XLT files? Or just regular .XLS files that contain a certain layout and format, will be opened and saved with a new file name to create a new workbook?

If these files are "separate of each other", that means they are not linked, right?

You could set up another file to define the data and save this as the master. Then open a template file, select a cell, enter the = sign, then select the master file with the data you want to display in the template file, select the cell containing the correct data and hit enter.

Now you have a link between the template file and the master file. Save and close the template file.

If you now change the data in the master file, save the master file and open the template file again, Excel will prompt if you want to update the links. If you select yes, then the linked cell will be updated from the master file.

So, in order to automatically update certain cells in a file, you will first have to set up the links as described above. After that, changing the information in your template files is just a matter of changing the master file.
