Formula entry syntax for conditional formatting?

I'm trying to figure out how to enter the formula for conditional formatting if I want the selected cell value to be red when it is <0.

    Nothing seems to work.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

Select the cell(s) and invoke Conditional Formatting

    Select Cell Value Is

    Select Less Than

    Enter: =0

Click Format to choose your colour

Almost and thanks but it is the VALUE I want to format. Not the cell.

So As best I can tell I need to enter a formula that says "<0" somehow.

How do I enter it? What's the syntax to do that? IF doesn't seem to work.

    Thanks!

Why don't you then just select the cell and go to Format|Cells.. and in the Number tab, select Number.. then select the format you want from the samples in the Negative numbers pane... I think the 2nd one down is the one you want.
