Use Drop Downs to Populate Other Drop Downs

    Hello Everyone,

I have been looking through the web and this forum for some time but still can't grasp what it is I need to do.

What I am trying to do is have one drop down that will auto populate other drop downs. I have in Column A a list of assignments and in Column B drop down lists with the employee's name. At the bottom of the sheet I have one more drop down list that contains the weekdays. I would like to figure out how to change the bottom weekday list from day to day and have that auto populate who goes to what assignment.

I would like to keep the drop downs for the Employee's name instead of a VLookup formula but don't know how. I have looked through the http://www.contextures.com/xldataval02.html page but I can't figure out how to link what it is teaching to what I need to do.

I attached a little sheet that shows my idea but no real formulas.

    Thanks so much in advance

    Hi,

is there only ever one name per weekday on the Lists sheet?

Do you want the user to select a value from B14 on the Assignment sheet or should Excel calculate the name that shows up?

I'm still a little unclear of what you want to do in B14, so please, if you could explain a bit more? What does the user put in, what is the logic in plain words, what do you expect to see (where) as a result.

    cheers

    Thanks for the reply teylyn!

I have attached a different file that may clear it up a bit.

In B14 I don't want anything to be calculated. What I am trying to do is, when the A14 Drop Down selects a day, the drop downs from B1 to B10 will populate a name from the list. When A14 picks the next day B1 to B10 would pick different names. That way I can create a rotation of who does what assignment. I included a list of who should go where on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday as a reference.

I also want to keep it so the drop downs from B1 to B10 can be changed manually if needed. So if one person was gone on Sunday but I still needed to have that assignment completed, I can just go to the drop down box and fill it in, even though its not part of the Sunday normal set up.

I hope this is clear but I am not savvy on this at all. Thanks again.
