got it thank you. here is what i'm trying to do. i'm a horserace handicapper. column A has T(main turf) and t (inner turf) column B has the track(BEL,AQU,etc.) i'm trying to write a lookup function that will look in column A( T or t) and then look in column B(BEL,AQU) so i can use it for my changes for the different times(my lookup list with all the tracks) i hope i explained it well
i typed the formula exactly as the help box said using the exact vlookup and it still returned a 2 please help

Most Excel functions don't distinguish between upper and lower case, but there are workarounds. Can you post a small workbook that shows what you're trying to do?

thank you for responding, i don't know how to post a workbook , i will just have to manually change the t for another letter so i can write a lookup function for the changes
