    Formatting Numbers

I have a spreadsheet listing all of the states and their subsequent populations. I cut and pasted some data from a website, but the numerical values I pasted are not formatted as numbers.

When I go to re-format them they are shown as "General". When I attempt to format them as "Number" it still does not work.

How can I format them as numbers? I attached the spreadsheet if it helps.

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Re: Formatting Numbers

Your copy/pasting also copied an invisible character.. Code(160) at the end of each number.

To get rid of them, go to Edit|Replace and in the Find What field, hold the ALT key down and type 0160 with the number pad of the key board only.

Leave the other field blank, and click Replace All.

Now you should be able to format your numbers.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

I have a laptop, therefore no number pad. I did try to hold the "fn" key to use those keys, but that would not work either.

    Re: Formatting Numbers

    Try formula in E2:

=SUBSTITUTE(B2,CHAR(160),"")+0 copied ot F2 and then copied right down..

Then Copy these columns... then go to B1 and go to Edit|Paste Special and select Values... then Ok.

Now you can delete those helper columns..

On a laptop hold down ALT + FN and use the numeric keypad* to type in the char code
(* numeric keypad being those alpha keys with numbers assigned (eg j,k,l etc...)

    that little gem c/o martindwilson
