Heh, debatable. Technically both formulas are correct, depending on your mathematical upbringing. Formatted to 1000ths, this is the result of the two different formulas. Though the results are different, if the table is mostly referential, I wouldn't consider it important. If the results are used to create payments of some kind, then the debate between the two formulas would need to be resolved.
I think yours is probably the better results.

Do you mean a formula that takes the first value (A1) and the last value (whereever it may be) and gives you the percentage difference?
Using Andy's original formula, this will give you the whole column answer:
=LOOKUP(9.9E+307,A:A)/A1 - 1
