    Question Working with percentages

I need to create a new column from this data set showing the percentage change in the closing price from the closing price on the previous trading day.

    79.000
    80.800
    82.400
    82.500
    83.800
    82.000
    81.300
    81.000
    83.300
    85.400
    85.200
    85.000

These are the closing prices. 79.000 is in A1, 80.800 in A2, etc. Which formula shall I use? I really cannot figure out a formula!

    Try this,

    B2: =(A2/A1)-1

You can either double click the bottom right corner of B2.
Or select B2, Hold the SHIFT and select the last cell in column B to have ad value and then use CTRL+D to fill down.

Heh, debatable. Technically both formulas are correct, depending on your mathematical upbringing. Formatted to 1000ths, this is the result of the two different formulas. Though the results are different, if the table is mostly referential, I wouldn't consider it important. If the results are used to create payments of some kind, then the debate between the two formulas would need to be resolved.

I think yours is probably the better results.

Do you mean a formula that takes the first value (A1) and the last value (whereever it may be) and gives you the percentage difference?

Using Andy's original formula, this will give you the whole column answer:

    =LOOKUP(9.9E+307,A:A)/A1 - 1

These values give a more dramatic variation
