Formula count occurences in a specific time period

Hi,

I am near enough ignorant about excel (and not much better with computers in general) and was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me. Obviously if this has been answered before - apologies for wasting time and a reply with a link would be appreciated.

I am a nurse trying to show how many patients were in our post anaesthetic care unit (PACU) during a specific time

I've got an into PACU time / Out of PACU time, I have managed to get a difference for which I can use when I'm looking at length of stay - but I need a formula to calculate how many patients were in PACU during a set period of time i.e. i.e. 08.00 - 09.00, 09.01 - 10.00, 10.01 - 11.00 and so on .....

This is the data I have

Hospital Number / Date / Theatre / Hour / Time into PACU / Time Out of PACU

Any help / info / formulas would be greatly appreciated - obviously in very simple terms considering my low computer IQ

Do you want to count partial hours or full hours only (i.e., if a patient checks out at 9:20, do you count them as having been there during the 9:01-10:00 hour?)

Yes I think full hours is ok

I'm trying to do like with like - i.e. staffing vs patient activity - and staff data has been calculated in that way already

Also I don't mind counting it that way as the actual raw data does not take into account time to waiting for porters when taking patients back to ward nor does it take into account the time for the nurse to take the patient back give handover and return (can be from 15 mins - 30 mins)

Could you tell me both for future reference ?

Will anyone be there for more than 24 hours? If so, you'll need a date out column, too. If not, I think this will work.

Yes but only 2 or 3 - I've have them highlighted already - so I can count and add them in manually (very techical) - otherwise I can add a date out column if needed for the formula,

That makes the formula a little easier, actually. I added a date out column. Manual addition would be necessary with the previous spreadsheet. This one should work with all instances (I think).

I apologise if the heading is vague - I thought it was ok, but then I'm a novice. I'll have a go a changing it - if you have a go at making the new members fell welcome
