    writing SUMIF formulas

gday ive just started using excel and in column D i input either L (long) or S (short). When I input L i want column K to subtract column G from column H and when I input S I want column K to subtract column H from column G. if anyone could help me with this formula it would be much appreciated.

I would just do the following:

but I don't know if that is exactly what you want to do. Just mark it as solved if this is the answer.
If you can't figure out how a formula works, try stepping through it using "Evaluate Formula" in the Formula Auditing menu item in the tools menu!

If you want to see where your code went wrong, try stepping through it by clicking in the code and pressing F8 and watch as the magic happens!

    Hi

Not sure if you're looking for formulae in two cells which give you the Sum of columns G & H depending on the condition, which your post implies, or if you're looking for a calculation on each row. If the former then in two separate cells:

If the latter you don't need a SUMIF() just use
