    Excel Won't Save New File...

This started a couple of weeks ago, and since it's my work computer, I have no idea if something got pushed onto my computer that messed up excel, but this is really irritating.

Basically, the main part of my job is that I get excel files from clients, then I have to take specific info from that file and work with it. So I copy/paste it into a new excel file. Recently, I started getting this error message when I tried to save the new file:
"Y:\GEO\Test.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding."

None of those things are true, as I can save any other kind of file in this location, and I can actually save the original excel file(from the client) in this location. As a matter of fact, the only work around I've found is to actually save OVER the original document with just the data I need. But I can't change the name when I save. I have to do that later, in the file list. It's a very tedious way to work, so I was hoping someone might have an idea what's causing this or how to fix it?!

Perhaps it's something to do with the way you are copying and pasting. Try pasting using the Edit > PasteSpecial > Values and number formats and see if that helps any.

JBeaucaire...nope. I can't even just open a new document, enter data, and save. Only way I can save is saving over an existing doc-which you can imagine isn't really an option in most cases.

So....a new twist: I CAN save a new file if I put a space in the filename. This makes no sense to me, and had our IT guy stumped too!

If a document opens as READ ONLY, then you can't save over the original filename. You would have to change at least one character to give the file a unique name....adding a space accomplished that.

Well, like I said, I can't even create a new file, unless I give it a name with a space! It's the oddest thing I've ever encountered! And a read-only file won't save if I change a character or add a character...only if I add a space!

I've just had the same problem and came accross your dialogue whilst searching for an answer.
What I HAVE found is that it's not WHAT I'm trying to save but WHERE I'm trying to save it to.
A couple of days ago I had my laptop repaired and, in order to save all my data, the repairers put all my files into a folder on the desktop. I didn't like it there so I moved it to where I used to keep it and that seems to be why I can no longer save files. Then I tried saving them to a folder on the desk top. No problem.
The odd thing is, as you say, that existing files are unaffected.
