    Assigning numbers to rows...

    Hi,

I'm in the process of uploading contacts into a relational database. I have already uploaded around 1050 already. I am uploading the second list from Excel and I need to assign numbers (contact Id's) to each record. I need to start at 1050 and count the rows up, but some of the companies have several contacts listed for them, so I need to find the unique value so that contacts within the same company have the same ID number.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Meryl

    Re: Assigning numbers to rows...

Assuming companies are sorted ascending...and they begin in A2...

Then in say B1, enter 1049

Then in B2, enter =IF(COUNTIF($A$2:A2,A2)=1,B1+1,B1) copied down.
Where there is a will there are many ways.
