Excel 2007: Shared WorkBook NOT Editable

    Hi

There is an unique problem in Excel 2007, with respect to updation of Shared Workbook that is in a Windows File Server folder

When a Shared WorkBook (that is in Windows File Server folder), is edited in Excel 2007 and a Save is done, an Error Dialog is thrown:
"Your changes could not be saved to "abc.xlsx" because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file"

However, the shared workbook can be edited/saved using Excel 2003

Please suggest a solution to overcome this issue

    Thanks in Advance!

The only suggestion I have is: Don't use shared workbooks. A shared workbook is extremely unstable, delivers unexpected results, throws errors that can not be explained and will become corrupt soon, if it is not already.

Let users edit the workbook sequentially, instead of in parallel, or think about a proper multi-user alternative. Excel is not multi-user friendly.

Consider a real CM system like Perforce (admittedly, the only one I ever used, but really, really liked).

In addition it has a COM interface, so you can do check-out/check-in programmatically.

Re: Excel 2007: Shared WorkBook NOT Editable

Thank you guys for the replies!

But interestingly the problem in Excel 2007 is not limited only to Shared Workbook

I have a excel workbook in windows file server folder like
    \\abc_proj\test_main\ls\abc.xlsx

When I make a Edit and Save this using Excel 2007, I get Error Dialog "Access Denied. Contact your Administrator"

I am able to replace the file itself from Windows Explorer. But I am not able to edit using Excel 2007

With Excel 2003, Edit/Save is possible

Can you suggest a solution to make edit/save possible with Excel 2007?

    Thanks in advance again

    Mouli,

Let me know what you find out. I'll do the same. I recentlty upgaded some of my users to office 2007, and the upgrades are all having this issue. No office 2003 users are experiencing this. I've read that 2007 requires either modify or delete permissions for the user or group, which will allow you the ability to save the file, but that creates an additional problem. The modify or delete permission then allows the user to delete the subfolder the file resides in. Not good for a file share. If you come across the proper solution, let me know. I'll do the same.
