Try
=(HOUR(A1))*3600+MINUTE(A1)*60+SECOND(A1)
Hope that helps.

Hi RoyUK,
Thanks, that worked on two of my documents, but not on my third. I just get #VALUE!
I've checked the formatting, but still getting that error. Any ideas?
Thanks
Jen
Try
=IF(ISNUMBER(--A1),A1*86400,"")
format as General / Number
If you get a Null the implication is that the value (col A) is not a true Time value / string (ie can not be treated/coerced as numeric)
On an aside you could also see the seconds by formatting originals (or copies thereof) as [ss]
