Converting a date so Excel recognizes it

I have a column of dates in the format mm/dd/yyyy eg. 12/31/2009
I have almost 300 dates and I was wondering how I could convert it, not by hand, so it is recognizable by excel so that I can graph it in a scatter plot?
I don't want the year included, but i don't mind if it is if it makes it easier.

I forgot to mention that i tried graphing it but rather than getting dates on the x axis i got numbers like 200.
Is it possible to get dates there?

    Welcome to the forum, Lisa.

If the dates are stored as text, you can select the column and do Data > Text to columns, Finish.

If that doesn't work, post a simple workbook that illustrates the problem.

I was wondering if I could change the date so instead of 12/31/2009 it becomes Dec-31?

    Use Custom Formatting

In the Home Tab select Format from the Cells section. Then Format Cells & Custom Format then type in mmm-dd
    Hope that helps.
