Sorting a football/soccer league table

Hello,

I am trying to create a spreadsheet for the upcoming World Cup (soccer).

I have listed all the games, right through to the final, and the user will input the scores they are predicting.

The scores are used in formula to determine each team's group-stage results (i.e. how many games won, how many games drawn, how many games lost, goals scored, goals conceded, goal difference and points).

I have all this information for each team, but my problem comes when trying to get the groups (32 teams split into 8 groups) to sort automatically, firstly by points, and if need be, then by goal difference, then by goals scored.

I would prefer this to be carried out without using a macro, if possible.

I think it may be possible for it to be carried out using VLOOKUP and RANK in combination with eachother, but I have hit a brick wall and cant see any solution.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have a look at this file.

It was started for someone who didn't reply to their post.

It only partially works but perhaps we could modify it to suit your needs, (and add some tips that DonkeyOte gave)

I already have all of the funtionality that the attached spreadsheet has on my version.

My problem is automatically sorting the league table, which it appears the attached spreadsheet doesnt do either.

I somehow posted the wrong workbook, I must have overwritten that one accidentally.

Have a look at this one it sorts on four fields in the group tables

Hi, and thanks for the help so far.

The spreadsheet you attached still does not work correctly. It awards 2 points for a draw, and it still doesnt seem to sort them correctly (points are all jumbled-up).

Okay I got it wrong, I thought it was 2pts for a draw.

The problem with the pts order seems to be with the goal differences, I'll give that criteria some more thought. In the meantime I have removed it as a criteria.

See if it works any better now.

it works fine however one snag i see is that the teams are listed randomly for example group A has france at the top with 1 point and Uruguay with 4 points at the bottom lol this cannot be right lol

yes please I would also like to be able to get into the cell when you post the link to it so I can copy and paste the formula making minor adjustments I am working hard trying to do the english football league with the added game play of predicting the score with a number of players and would like to have 5 tables 4 for the actual teams and 1 for the players predictions a hard task I know but once its done its done and I have till the 14th August 2010 when the season properly starts so please please help it would also be nice to have the colour transfered to sheet2 (FIXTURES) that are coloured as in sheet1 (TEAMS)

P.S it would be an added bonus to be able to use somewhere I dont know where for the results to be added automatically as filling in everyones scores is time consuming as it is lol
