    Formatting Cells for Time

I am extracting data from an outside database that contains minimum and maximun times for file processing. The extracted colum of time (for example) looks like this:
+00:02:07.35000. I initially highlighted the column, and did Format Cells, Custom, and chose h:mm:ss. I then did a Find +00, Replace All to remove the +00. I ended up with
12:07:35 on the bar, and appears as 07:35 AM in the cell. I'm then able to get an average time for the entire column using a =sum(a1:b3)/2 formula.

This worked one day for the entire column, but when attempting to perform the same steps on another extract of the same data, just different month, I'm unable to format the cells, and the formula calculates to 0. The cells show as being Custom. I don't know if I changed an Excel setting in error, but this is an issue.

    thanks for any input....

    Welcome to the forum.

Post a workbook that illustrates the problem.

    Re: Formatting Cells for Time

I can't post the workbook as it's sensitive data, however, examples of elapsed time, once extracted, appear like the samples below. They are left-aligned or justified, and are General from a Format standpoint.
    +00 18:41:48.173000
    +00 10:17:11.310000
    +00 02:46:34.895000
    +00 02:39:12.931000
    +00 02:26:39.642000
    +00 02:04:41.372000
    +00 01:50:00.175000
    +00 01:40:11.333000
    +00 01:36:27.225000
    +00 01:32:42.503000
    thanks....

The data may be sensitive, but the problem is not. Strip everything but the numbers, post a workbook, and provide an example of what you want.

    Hi,

Select the column of data, go to Find/Replace, in the Find type in "+00 " without the quotes, but include the space after the second zero. In the Replace - leave that blank > Press Replace All.

With the cells still selected right click and Format Cells > Custom format to hh:mm:ss.000

Then use =AVERAGE(A1:A10) to get your average of the range

    Re: Formatting Cells for Time

    Hello Oldchippy,

Thank you for your assistance! That fixed my formatting issue. I believe the one small piece that did the trick was including the space after the second zero.

    Thanks again....
