Dealing with long databases/calculations with high volume of data

Does anyone have experience with lookup functions (VLOOKUP) not working properly when used extensively for about 1000 entries+.

It returns "#N/A" although a match clearly exists.

Moreover, if the same function is performed upon the same single entry (without calculating for the rest of the database), the correct return value is displayed.

What are the limits of these functions?

Sounds to me as though you have underlying errors (NA) in the extended data set.

There is no limitation on VLOOKUP range per se but should errors exist within the set referenced then the result will also be an error.
