Finding a formula for adding word phrases

I am trying to add up different categories in a spread sheet to find out how people heard of our facility. So, we have 11 different categories that people choose from that include Friends / Family, Word of Mouth, Swim Meet, etc... With over 400 different people in the spread sheet I don't want to count each an every one.

How do I create an equation that will count the number of times a given phrase comes up?

    Thanks in advance

=COUNTIF(A$1:A$400,"Word of Mouth"). You can replace the text with a cell reference.
