    Lookup most recent text entry

I have a row of data:

JAN FEB MAR APR MAY CURRENT GRADE
    2a 2b 2c 3a 3b

They are pupils grades each month.
I would like to display the most recent grade in the last column but cannot workout a formula to do it. I know it can be done if the grades were purely numbers 2,3,4,5,6 but can it be done when they are entered as text e.g. 2a, 2b, 2c ?
