    Dynamic cell referencing

Apologies if the answer to my question is contained elsewhere in the forum. I am relatively new to Excel and not sure what to use as search criteria.

I wish to call dynamically updated currency exchange rates (I managed to do that okay with Get External Data) from a worksheet cell, and place it in another cell, based on the text string in an adjacent cell. For example...
    • Cell A1 contains a drop down list of currency pairs (GBPUSD, EURJPY, etc.).
    • Cells A2:A16 contain live exchange rate data for 15 currency pairs.
    • If I select, say, GBPUSD from the list in A1, am I able to have Cell B1 display the relevant exchange rate referenced from the A2:A16 range, and have it update in real time?
I'm sorry if this sounds confusing, but it's the only way I can explain...

Look at the VLookup() function built into Excel.

    Thank you Marvin.

I like a man of few words, as well as a challenge. It took a while but I eventually figured it out. The nesting of 15 VLOOKUP functions was the tester, but works.

    Thanks again,

It sounds like you made it harder than I expected. If you attach a sample sheet we might find a simpler formula.

To attach - click on "Go Advanced" at the bottom the message box and then the paperclip icon that will appear above the advanced message box.

I like a man with persistance. Now lets see if there's an easier formula. 15 nested sounds like it can be done easier.
