    conditional sum function

I have a bunchf of xls files containing a bunch of data, in this case game statistics for european soccer games. I'd like to build some spreadsheets that churns out sums and averages for various teams - for example, Arsenals average goals while playing at home. As I understand it, there are several ways of doing it but I just end up with a bunch of error messsages.

So for example, I'd like my spreadsheet to show the sum (or average) of column E (home team goals) when column C (HomeTeam) equals "Arsenal". Should be simple but I'm very new to this stuff...

    many thanks in advance

Re: probably super easy question about conditional sum function

Hi and welcome to the board

Please change your title to something more appropriate. The " probably....about" is not really neccesary is it?

The rules are simple and for the benefit of all. If you do not like moderated forums choose another - there are plenty to choose from.
Posts along the lines of the above are simply not acceptable. Would you talk to a colleague the same way ? I suspect not... but who knows.

Assuming XL2003 as implied by profile either

    a) SUMIF/COUNTIF (SUMMA.OM / ANTAL.OM pending version)

    b) use an AVERAGE(IF Array (MEDEL / OM pending version)

XL2007 or above see AVERAGEIF (MEDELOM pending version)

If you need further assistance post a sample file.
