Save As Default Resets

Hi all,

I'm having a simple but enormously irritating issue.

I'm operating Excel 2007. The default save as extension is .xls. When I go to Excel Options -> Save and update the "Save files in this format" to xlsx, it stays that way only for the open session. When I close Excel completely and reopen, it defaults back to xls.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I agree, that's also what I would expect. I've also never had a previous version of Excel on this computer. I'm at a loss as to why it would default to .xls, and why changing the setting would only remain for the active session. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
