    sort/filter/lookup problem

    Hi all,

    Please see attached .xls

    I have 3 columns, 2 text and 3rd a cost.

I would like to be able to filter the first, in this case 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,...etc and then look at the second, check how many are a match to the first and second column and add the total cost.,
    ie [1,Bed+1,Bed = (423+236)] [2,Shoes+2,Shoes+2,Shoes=(432+654+653)

(The .xls will make more sense)

    Thanks

    Hi,

The only one of your 5 example numbers that I can see in your example is 654, and that's shown against 1 Fridge, so I just don't understand what you're wanting. Please clarify.

    kryt0n,

In your workbook you have not completed and area for your comparisons (what your output should look like).

    Detach/open workbook kryt0n - EF755112 - SDG12.xls

Which area resembles what you are looking for: F2:H16, or K1:Q5

    Re: sort/filter/lookup problem

Sorry, put a little note on the .xls, maybe that will clear things up.

I want to look at the first column and look at the second collumn. I want it to scan down the list and if it finds another with the same combination, it adds the two figures together.

    Hope that clears it up.

    Hi,

Demerge all your cells in column D (it's rarely ever a good idea to merge cells for reasons we won't pursue here), and then enter the following in D8 and copy down

    adjust the ranges as necessary.

Sorry, late edit. I see you only have Excel 2003 and therefore don't have SUMIFS() and COUNTIFS()

Therefore use a helper column E and add the formula in E8: =A8&B8 and copy this down. Now your formula in D8 is:

    Hi,

Were you using the second formula I gave you?

Here's the file with the relevant formula anyway.
