Settings changed for default cell format - want to change it back to general!

    Hi all !

I am having a little trouble with some of my excel spreadsheets: I am using some more or less complicated excel spreadsheet, where apparently all of a sudden all cells where formated as "accountig", which now looks a bit strange with all the dates and numbers beeing € amounts. But not only that, also when I open another sheet (for example by clicking a pivot-table) the whole new sheet is formatted with "accounting" as well.

Is there a way to change excels default format choice !? I wasn't aware of that, but suddenly it feels like . . .

Thank you very much in advance !

I'm not sure which problem you have.

    1. When you create a new file, all cells are formatted to "accounting" by default
    2. A specific that already exists had its formatting changed to "accounting"

How do you open a new sheet by clicking on a pivot table? Not sure what is happening to you there.

You may be able to troubleshoot by opening Excel Help and searching for the item entitled "Customize how Excel starts". That will only be helpful if your default workbook template has somehow been changed to have the formatting you described. I am not sure that is the problem, though.

Hi and thank you for your answer.

    1) No, creating new files is working fine. No problems here.

    2) Yes, it's 2 files that are having the exactly same problem.

When you double-click on a value in a pivot-table, excel automatically creates a new sheet displaying the underlying data. But this was only an example on where the problems occurs. It's the same when inserting new rows - format always is accounting.

    Any ideas ?

Seems specific to your situation. Can you attach your file, plus the file with the pivot table source data?

Hi ! Good idea - I am attaching an example file containing only a little part of my data and analyses. You don't necessarily need to create the new sheet via clicking the pivot table - same issue (all cells formatted as accounting) when creating a new sheet manually.

Hope, someone can help me. Thanks in advance !

Re: Settings changed for default cell format - want to change it back to general!

I'm sorry, I tried but I couldn't crack this one.

I created a new worksheet, and it came up just like you said, where every cell was formatted as Accounting.

Then I tried inserting a new worksheet by the context menu and selected Insert, and explicitly selected my default worksheet template, and it still came up formatted as Accounting. When I do the same thing on a workbook I create on my own machine, the cells are formatted as General.

I did not find anything in a web search to help. Sorry.....

Not sure if you've found a solution to this but I have the same issue. I figured out a solution a few months ago but have come across it again and can't remember what I did.

The temporary fix I've found is to start a new workbook (default cell format should be general in 2007) and simply move the spreadsheets from your current file to the new file. This should take on the properties of the new workbook.

    Hope that helps.

Just came across this error and this wasn't really an issue until i had to use a Pivot table. After hours of reading forums and experimenting on, I stumble upon a "solution."

    Workaround:

    1) Open the workbook with the "incorrect" data format
    2) Open another workbook with the "proper" data format (i.e. General)
    3) In the workbook with the "incorrect" date format, go to "HOME" --> "Cell Styles"
    4) In "Cell Styles" select "Merge Styles" and select the file with the proper/desired data format and merge.
    5) When you insert a new sheet or refresh your Pivot Table, you will each cells should be defaulted in "general" format, thus remove the annoying "date" issue.

I have no clue what cause the issue and I'm still pretty damn annoyed that this happened. The one thing I did not want to do is rebuild my Dashboard.

    Best,
    Jon

Angry Re: Settings changed for default cell format - want to change it back to general!

    Hi,

Our company is using MS Office 2010 and so is the Excel version.

I am living the exact same nightmare. And nightmare is a small work to express the disaster I am in.

I have created a lot of Excel tools for our sales rep that cannot be modified. They have a lot of sheets with mixed cell formatting.

All of a sudden, everything on every sheet came as Accounting with the "€" symbol. Hey I am down under in Australia! Why would I even have such a currency symbol in our spreadsheets?

I am testing one file and through all the sheets, every blank cell is formatted as Accounting instead of General.

When creating a new blank sheet, they are all formatted as accounting.

I cannot play around with trying to fix each and every sheet on these files. There are so many!

Is there a way to create a new sheet with the general format as default? I would think this could be set up in options, advanced options eventually but I can't find anything.

This is another Microsoft annoyance to add to the already long list...
