vlookup - entering new data manually into data validation cell

So I have a named range which I reference to a validation drop down list. I then have another cell with a vlookup formula referencing the data validation list. I have the cell with the drop down list configured so I can add a custom item manually that isn't on the list, but this throws an error to the cell with the vlookup formula.

Basically, when I enter a custom item in the data validation field, I then want vlookup to return a value of zero.

Is there a way to make this work? TIA

    Dale
