Hi John - with regards to your post - if you are serious about asking for help you really need to express your requirement a little better. You may find it easier to upload a workbook and describe there what you want.

As it stands I don't think that your post is clear enough.

You're probably thinking about Group and Outline. Which version of excel do you have (makes a difference in where you go to set it up)?

Thanks for prompt response. Please find the sample excel. On the extreme left bar, you would see a +/- button ( which i am referring to as collapse/expand button ). Not sure if it is an excel feature, or with some macro.

Any background or insight about it would be helpful.

    Regards. John

Yes, that's Group and Outline. You can find it under Data. First select the rows you want included and then click on Group. If you make a mistake, use Ungroup. Note that you can have multiple levels. Also, you will want to use the SUBTOTAL function rather than SUM if you want to display totals of what's visible.

    Good luck!

Re: Excel - Expand and Collapse Section

I'm having an odd problem with the grouping / outlining -- I'm going through my spreadsheet grouping the areas I want to be able to collapse, and I get about half way down and then it stops giving me the +/- signs - it still groups because I can see dots along the left edge and they are slightly to the right like the previous groups - but there's no way to collapse and expand. This document is NOT protected or anything like that, and there's no formulas or complicated formatting - so I can't figure it out. Maybe there's a limit to how many outline levels you can have, e.g. only 3 levels in - but the ones that stop giving me the collapse/expand icons are on the same level as ones above that did work. Weird!
