Strange objects when opening 2003 spreadsheet in 2013

Hi all. Having problems with strange objects appearing when importing a 2003 spreadsheet into 2013. The objects can't be manually selected or deleted and the cells behave like blanks. The problem is that the symbols are appearing when the spreadsheet is printed. The objects can be selected using F5 - Special - Objects but this selects everything and is not really practical. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An actual spreadsheet is better than a picture.

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.
