    League tables

    Hi all,

I have created a league table for my local GAA (Gaelic football) team.
This is done using look up tables and tie's are decided by the following system:

Points total, score difference, score for, this is done by multiplying the number for points total by a high number, then adding it to the score diff x smaller number and adding that to the "score for" x a smaller number again
The teams are then ranked according to the result of this.

The problem is though that this season the rules have been changed so that the 1st deciding factor in a tie between teams in the league is the head to head result between these teams.
If this was a draw it then goes to the original system of score difference ....etc

Does anyone know a way of setting the table up in this manner?

I hope this all makes sense!

    Regards,

    N

Points total, score difference, score for

What are these specifically? Is points total =/= score for?

To have a chance of getting this right we'd need to see your source data, or at least an example.

No sorry, the points total is the points for the league, so if you win a match you get 2 points, if you draw you get 1.

The score difference is the amount you've scored in every game - the amount you've conceded in every game.
The score for is the amount you've scored overall.

So if team A and B were level on points in the league
    Team A scored 30 and conceded 15
    Team B scored 35 and conceded 20

Both teams score difference would be +15
So they are level on points, they are level on score difference so the next determining factor is which team scored the most, in this case it would be team B

Hope that clears that up for you

Yep, I think I get all the criteria now, just to check - win decided on:
Points (2 for win, 1 for draw)
    then, where tied:
    Winner of head-to-head
then, where result was a draw (or if everyone plays everyone twice I assume win/lose and lose/win would also count?)
Score difference (score for - score against)
    then, where tied:
    Score for

Got it all, now we need to see what you're working with to try to work it out. It looks like quite a thorny question!

    Re: League tables

    It's quite complicated, but possible.

A two team tie would be easy enough, but in the case of a 3 team (or more) tie, what would happen in the following circumstance:

Team A, B and C all level on points.

    Head to head results:

    Team A 4-0 Team B
    Team C 3-1 Team A
    Team B 0-1 Team C
    Team A 1-0 Team C
    Team B 2-2 Team A
    Team C 1-1 Team B

At 3 points a win, Team C and Team A both would have 7 points, and Team B 2.

However, in all games between the 3, Team A's score difference is +3 while Team C's is +2, but Team C has a better head to head against Team A.

So who would be higher in the table?

I'm going to assume the latter - see attached Premier League tracker, I have amended this based on the rules provided above. Hopefully this will help you understand how this can be achieved.

    Re: League tables

    Hi,

I have a similar problem with an NHL spreadsheet im trying to devise.

The rankings go in this order
    Points
Fewer number of games played (during season only)
Regulation on wins (i.e. all wins except SO wins)
The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs
    Goal Difference

Im stuck on the head to head, ive looked at the spreadsheet above which is a great solution but cant get it to work in my spreadsheet.

Ive attached a copy of my spreadsheet, can anyone help??
