Generate race places from lap times

Hi,

I'm making a spreadsheet for a motorsport race coming up soon.

I'm after a formula that will take the times of a series of cars (in mm:ss.00) and display the position of one car in that.

(as in working out who came first, second, third, etc)

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook, the workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

If needed supply a before and after sheet in the workbook so the person helping you can see what you are trying to achieve.

Doing this will ensure you get the result you need!

OK, here's one, very simple.

The first column has times entered manually in minutes, seconds and hundredths (mm:ss.00) which excel converts to a number for calculations (since it can add times together no problems).

The second would have the order by fastest time, so first, second, third, etc.

Right now the only way I have to do that is to sort by the time and enter the places manually.
We have a small team, dozens of cars and multiple events happening simultaneously, so we don't have time to work it all out by hand.

I am after a way to automate the process of converting a car's time to it's result during competition.
