Adding a header forces new page

    Excel 2007
    Windows XP

I have some maintenance spreadsheets set up that we print out when we go out to a job. I needed a watermark in the background to give the image a look of being on company letterhead. To do that I inserted a picture as a header and it worked wonderfully - both when printing and when converting to PDF it looks like it's on company letterhead.

But for some odd reason inserting the picture as a header creates blank pages on each spreadsheet. This is a huge problem both when printing and when creating a PDF to send to customers. There are no cells carrying over to other sheets because when I remove the header it goes back to a single sheet. I've already tried:

    1. Setting the print areas
    2. Deleting hundreds of rows/columns after the ones I need
    3. Resizing the image

I'm attaching a sheet that is an example of what's happening. As soon as you delete the header it goes back to fitting it all within the print areas I've specified.

What version of Excel are you using?

The reason I ask is that your profile says 2003 but the file has an .xlsx extension.

It views fine in Print Preview on Excel 2007 but gives a second, blank sheet (but for the watermark) in Excel 2003.

I need to change that. My last job used 2003, but my new one uses 2007.

That's odd that it's showing as a single page for you. Does it do the same when saving as a PDF?

Weird. When I do File > Save As > PDF I get this.

    That's what I see in 2003 although I didn't save it as a .pdf.

I don't think I can help you with this as the difference, for me, is between 2003 and 2007 ... not to do with the watermark itself.

Re: Adding a header forces new page

I think I may have solved it. I reset the print areas (again), and moved some of the text boxes a little further away from the edge of the print area border. I'm thinking maybe there was just a few pixels worth of overlap that might have been forcing a new page.

Doesn't really explain why it works for me and not for you. Maybe a printer driver issue?
