    Question tally marks

    Hello,

I have a project I'm working on where I have to tally survey results.

Is there an Excel function that will allow me to tally the old-fashioned way - something similar to 1111 with a hash mark across to symbolize 5 votes?

I'm just looking for an easy way to tally a messy survey that has several possible answers for each question.

No, there is not. Check out my workbook below. "X"'s are added to Column A (Between A2 and A50) by doubleclicking on the cell. The number of X's are counted in Column B. Is that something you could work with?

Macros must be enabled for this to work. The code is in Sheet1 module and is

    Re: tally marks

you can use below formula to get tally mark from a given value,
    =REPT("||||| ",INT(A1/5))&REPT("|",MOD(A1,5))

Wow. You guys go much deeper with Excel than I can! I'm afraid most of what you've offered is over my head!

ChemistB, I looked at your spreadsheet, and this formula seems to work just fine (unless I'm missing something important):
    =IF(C12>0,LEN(C12),"")

    Thanks!

    Re: tally marks

I have one more question on this topic.

I've set up a 2nd sheet that looks up the tallied totals from the 1st sheet. Each question has 5 answers, and I want to just see the answer that received the most votes for each question.

Is there a formula to have Excel look at the 5 answers and display the one that is the biggest number?

You probably need to use =MAX

Here is a list of functions and descriptions for Excel.

    Yes, are we talking about comparing numbers in 5 cells (let's say A1, C4, D7, F9, G12)?

    Then
    =MAX(A1,C4, D7, F9, G12)
Is that what you are looking for?

Thank you so much for this formula!
Is there a way to assign a value so I can do a partial. ie: "X" has a value of one, but if I need a value of 0.5 (1/2) also.

    SherEware,

Unfortunately you need to post your question in a new thread, it's against the forum rules to post a question in the thread of another user. If you create your own thread, any advice will be tailored to your situation so you should include a description of what you've done and are trying to do. Also, if you feel that this thread is particularly relevant to what you are trying to do, you can surely include a link to it in your new thread.
