"Can't change this cell" error message

I am working with a spreadsheet that has been used for a number of years, and changed countless times. Now some of the cells in the spreadsheet will not permit changes. Everytime one of these cells is modified, Excel gives the message "Can't change this cell." No information is available in help, and I have found nothing about this specific error message anywhere on the internet or in Microsoft's database. The workbook is macro-free and no protections are turned on. Has anyone encountered this before and do you know how to fix it other than copying things to a new workbook?

Perhaps it has data validation on it.

While the cell is active go to Data|Validation and see if any rules have been applied.

What exactly is the message?

Hi adamfitz77 and welcome to the forum,

Does the cell have a CSE (Array) formula in it?
Does it have data validation in the cell?
Are you sure the cell isn't protected?
How are you trying to change the cell? Value? Font? Background?

Neither the sheet nor the workbook are protected, the cell does not contain a formula of any kind and there is no data validation active in the cell, or anywhere else in the workbook. I am simply trying to type a new value directly into the cell (specifically, these are four digit integers). The error message is exactly as stated in the title of this thread: "Can't change this cell." No other info is given with the error message.

My apologies. There is data validation, despite my certainty that there was not. Problem solved, although I'm a bit embarassed.
