    Pushing data into excel

    Hello,

The title of this post doesn't exactly speak to what I'm trying to do but it's as close as I could get.

My goal is to setup PivotTables based on some source data and then make that Pivot table a template as I change the source data. In fact, the source data headers will ALWAYS remain the same, all that will change is the amount of data in the source table and of course the metrics in the source table.

What's the best way to accomplish this in Excel? Alternatively, is it better to do this in Access?

You can convert your database to a Table, Insert tab, select Insert Table.

Then you can add or remove lines, and refresh the pivot table
Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Hi Sorry NBVC,

    I'm not following.

I have data in csv format. I will get new data every month but the headers will be the same. Therefore I only want to create a PT once and simple swap the data in and out. Will that work (the amount and valudes of the data will change)? Is the best way to do that in excel?

If I understand what you are doing, I've had good success using the Import External Data command. I don't know where to find it on the newer versions, but in the old versions of Excel, it was under the Data menu.

Basically, you tell it to import external data -> locate the desired .csv file -> Work through the text import wizard -> In the last dialog after the Text import wizard is finished, click properties to tell Excel how to handle this data range.

Thanks, MrShorty, I'll try that. However, I'm having trouble refreshing the data in my Pivot to be the newly imported data. I hit function F9 but can't get it. How do I refresh?

Right click pivot table and click Refresh... or click the table, and in the PivotTable Tools menu that appears, select the Options tab and find the Refresh icon in the Data section.
