constain data validation to first column of 2 column named range

I have a dynamic named range that is two columns wide. I use VLOOKUP to display the second column elements based on the first column. I would like to use data validation to constrain a cell to options from the first column of the dynamic named range only, but can't seem to get it right (The pull down contains options from both columns of the named range).

Do I need to create a separate named range that is only one column wide?

    Thanks.

A second named range would be the easiest way
    Hope that helps.
