Test questions: wrong answer with highest num choosing

    Hello.

For accounting tests I give, a number of (intentionally ambiguously worded) problems are written so that there are 12 possible choices (letters a-l) for the answer, only 2 of which are correct. Either correct choice by the student counts the problem as correct... but in some other tests, they have to get both right to count the problem as right (depends on the material). In my results spreadsheet, I'd like to have, in a column for each problem:

Row 2 - first correct answer (letter)
Row 3 - second correct answer (letter)
Row 1065-1076 - the number of times an answer was selected (row 1065: a, row 1066: b, etc) with the letter 'titles' to the immediate left.

What I would like to be able to do is extract the highest number related to a single wrong answer. For example, if answer 'h' was incorrect and had been selected 350 times, which was more than any other wrong answer, I'd like to write a formula that would find the 'h' value and the '350' and put those values in cells at the bottom of the column.

Conceptually, I guess I am sort of trying to do a vlookup of a max value, but excluding the values related to the entries in rows 2 and 3. I am sure I could do the lookup, but I have no clue as to how to exclude certain values. The spreadsheet will have 50 problems in consecutive columns with similar entries. I've done this in Access, but exporting the data to others gets to be a problem... so I'd like to try it in Excel.

    Thanks for any help.

    Tom
