Formula copy problem: only text value paste allowed

After years of trouble free usage with earlier excel versions, Excel 2010 is giving me the following copy/paste problem with formulas (Windows 7 OS).

I am trying to copy a cell containing the the following formula
    =OFFSET(F200,1,0)-D200+E200
    with the resolved value of
    123.45
into a neighboring cell on the same sheet.

When I go to paste the selected function in the neighboring cell, the paste function only allows me to paste the resolved value of 123.45 as text, not the formula that I want.

Symptom: When I select the source cell, the copy selection I make has a solid background and not the expected animated dotted "crawling ants" boundary

Another symptom is that if I select one cell to copy and then a range to paste into, the paste only fills the 1st cell of the range (i get a "Data on the Clipboard is not the same size and shape as the selected area" popup)

If I try Paste Special, it offers two options "Unicode Text" or "Text"

    Other info:
The text values that the formula is operating on were originally copied in from a CSV file.
But this is a excel file with a filename of test.xlsx and no other instances of Excel are open
System was rebooted and still exhibits this behavior.

    Any ideas?

Is your sheet protected? Are the cells merged? Can you upload a sample workbook?

    Thanks Whizbang!

Resolution: It looks like it was coming from a conflict for the clipboard with another program that was usually running. I've learned to stop the other program and clear the clipboard with the shortcut: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c "echo off | clip"

Exact same problem here (very well described sanchius) - copy and paste results in values only, formulas are not being pasted. This occurs across all worksheets (even new blank ones). Restarting the computer, closing applications and clearing the clipboard (delete all), does not help.

Cool Re: Formula copy problem: only text value paste allowed

While it was not enough to exit all programs and clear clipboard, the problem was solved by deleting all programs in autostart, and re-booting computer. Copy and paste function worked properly again (dotted lines around copy box returned, etc). I then opened all programs one-by-one, and the problem re-occured when I opened Skype. This may have something to do with the latest Skype add-in, 'click to call' - which I installed yesterday. I will delete this add-in, reboot, and hopefully get some work done.

Disabling the Skype add-on in Internet Explorer also solved the problem for me. Then, I uninstalled Skype Click-to-Call which removed the add-on (and the problem).

Thumbs up Re: Formula copy problem: only text value paste allowed

Problem Solved! Thank you so much for this!

I repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled office 2010 to no avail. I was thinking of uninstalling java and flash player. this definitely saved my time.. how'd you figure it out?

    Thanks so much.

I have been going mad trying to copy a formula, such a simple process, but kept getting a text result. Deleting the skype app has resolved it - I would never have got there without this forum - thank you!

I just started having a similar experience. I don't use Skype but it prompted me to check what other programs I'm using and found that it happens when I'm using VNC to take over a different PC. Glad to find a reason for it.

Ugh I'm having the same trouble and don't have Skype on this network. Guess I'm going to have to go through them all one at a time. Thanks for the info though, this helps me pin down where to start.
