Cannot Open .xls file created in Excel 2003 with Excel 2010

I received an error that the file is not in a recognizable format. Of course, the file was able to be opened in Excel 2003 and still can. The users in our office were upgraded to Office 2010. I have taken care of all the Trust features in 2010, so this is not the issue.

Has anyone out there the answer to this predicament?

Are you sure it's really in 2003 format? Is it possible that you saved it in .xlsx format but the file extension got renamed to .xls? (This would only be possible if you have the conversion add-on for 2003.) An easy check for this would be to make a copy, change the extension to .xlsx, and see if you can open it.

Re: Cannot Open .xls file created in Excel 2003 with Excel 2010

I have actually found the solution to my problem. The .xls file was a 1990's vintage which was format compatible with Lotus 123. I have found that Office 2003 was the last MS Office to support these files. Office 2007 and beyond do not support this file type. The file type can be converted in Office 2003 to a XML format which is compatible with Office 2007 and beyond. Another workaround is to use Open Office to convert the files to the XML format.

I hope this might help someone else with a similar difficulty confronting them.
