How can I subtract ---- IF cell Q4 contains "xxxx" then subtract 1 from count?

I have an excel sheet where I am doing the old school type prison math....IIII and the fifth is counted as one but in this case I am saying that for every four X's subtract one from an on going count resides in T19.

    How can I word this?

The only thing I can think of is this:

    If Q4 = "xxxx" then T19 - 1

This doesn't quite get it though

This explanation is a little tough to follow. I can't get what data is in what cells and where your answer goes. Not sure what "ongoing count" could mean; if it's one cell, it's a single count.

Can you create a sample Excel sheet that shows examples of the kind of data you are working with, and then the result you want to have? And then we can figure out what formula will give you that result.
