File keeps opening as if multiple copies opened

I have a sheet that I will be updating from often that I email to myself from our inventory program. I have been creating a macro to use this sheet with some success.
Now every time I open the sheet, even with no previous Excel sheet opened at all, even killed the EXCEL.EXE process, it opens as Inventory(2).xls. Does anyone know what's going on? The macro sometimes opens the sheet, could there be a 'ghost' copy floating around out there? If so how do I get rid of it?

Re: File keeps opening as if multiple copies opened

    Hi

It may have to do with existing copies that have been stored in temp directories on your PC from the last time it was opened. On my PC at least, there are a heap of directories / files that don't seem to be visible using explorer.

If you open the file and in C1 enter the command =cells("filename",a1) it should give you a path of the file. Try getting to that path in explorer. If you can, then see if there are already multiple copy(ies) of the file.

If you can't get there using explorer, then try using dos commands to get there and see what exists.

In my case it has a path like

    C:\Documents and Settings\???\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\A15MVYD8\[filename(1).xlsm]sheetname.

If I try to go to that directory using explorer, it gets to temporary internet files, but doesn't show anything further in terms of sub directories. But using DOS commands I can get there.

So for some reason I got to work today and it just worked. Does restarting your computer clear out temporary files? Anyway, thanks for the help!
