By adding 0 in left (e3,1), the formula is ensuring that the number is not left as text, thus actually it is converting the '5 into 5 i.e., converting a text digit to numeric.

Hi,
LEFT(E3,1) will return the first character of whatever is in E3 as a text string. Adding 0 to it attempts to convert it to a numeric value so that ISNUMBER can evaluate it as numeric if so.
