Using a formula to define address for hyperlink

    Hello

I am trying to improve a log of samples that go through our laboratory. We have a log for each project we have. each sample has a number and can generate a number of daugter samples. to help keep a track of each sample and its origins we add a cell that includes the parent serial number so we can see where the sample came from. when using the log it would be usefull to quickly move from one daugter sample to the parent sample without having to manualkly scroll up the sheet. Is it possible to use a hyperlink that uses the record of the parent serial to hotlink to the actual records for that sample.

basically i need to define the address of the hyperlink by using a lookup or index function, can this be done??

    Many thanks

You don't need to use a hyperlink, just use a Defined Name, like "Parent"
where the defined name Parent points to your top sample cell number, IE Parent equals cell A1

I don't have 2003, but you should be able to find it on the Task Bar, under Formulas I think.

Then you can use either the CTRL-G shortcut for GoTo, and just enter the word Parent
and you GOTO the cell defined as Parent

Or you can use the Name Box (Upper Left Hand corner on the Formula bar)
just enter the defined name Parent, press Enter and your there.

Would using the Name Box box to give parent cells a name work for you?
After creating the entry in the parent cell and with the cell still selected, click into the Name Box (immediately left of address bar), and give the cell a name by typing into the Name Box and pressing the Enter key.

Afterward, you can click on the drop down next to the name box and select the parent cell to navigate to it.

Otherwise, you will probably need a VBA solution, in which case upload a sample workbook (dummy data, exact structure).
