Templates - Forcing Save as rather than Save on first save

    Hi,

I use Excel 2010 and have a bunch of templates I use that I load up from shortcuts on the desktop. It saves me time with entering tables I often use etc.

The problem is, when I hit the save icon at the top left of the ribbon it always overwrites the template, which is annoying. I know it does it, but force of habit is to hit the save button every few minutes, not to go into the menu and go to Save As.

I want Excel to ask me where to save the file as a regular workbook, rather than overwriting my template. Basically, the first time I hit Save, I want it to think it was Save As, like it does when you start with a blank workbook.

Is there an option I can change so that when hitting the Save icon at the top of the ribbon for a template it acts as Save As?

The templates I use are in .xltx format by the way.

    Make the file read-only.

Re: Templates - Forcing Save as rather than Save on first save

Actually, this isn't quite as good as I first thought... When I come to save I am taken to the folder the templates are kept in, rather than the last folder I saved something in as normal. Also, the format is set as Excel Template (xltx) rather than Excel Workbook (xlsx)... There must be a better way, the pre-set templates behave as I want (the first save is treated as Save As and I am taken to the last folder I saved something in), it's just the templates I have created myself that don't. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
