Protected Workbook - Only Option is to Protect? No Unprotect

    All,

I am not asking for help breaking a password protected workbook. My issue is I have a Workbook that I am the author of and I have it protected using "Protect Workbook" from the review panel. When I open the file that button shows "Unprotect Workbook", I can put in my password and unprotect and go about my business.

However My boss who also needs to use the file is unable to do this. When they open the file the review panel still says "Protect Workbook", but when trying to do things such as Unhide a sheet the option is not available because I am assuming excel knows the workbook is protected. If he clicks "Protect Workbook" nothing happens.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I have a third user that can open and unprotect this file just fine. Maybe its a setting?

    Thank you,
    Jon

    Hi Jon,

As an option.. do you share workbook using "share workbook" option and you boss is accessing this file via LAN path ?

Nope the workbook is not shared. My boss is accessing the file by navigating through windows explorer and then opening it. I am completely stumped.

    Okay...

Is it happening with this particular file ? If some other person sends Excel to your boss, does that file opens successfully.. ?

Actually I just made a second file and protected using the Protect Sheet. He has the same issue on this file as well. Maybe he needs to reinstall excel?

Ya.. re-installing would be last option.

As you are using Excel 2003, does your boss has the same version? If he has later version (2007 & 2010).. is he click on the option "Enable Editing" after opening the file ?
