Can I set Excel so that if I put a month in a particular cell, say A1 (January), A2 - A12 will automatically follow with Feb - Dec etc... and if I then changed A1 to March the reast would update with April onwards??

Yes if you enter a proper date in A1, e.g. 31/1/2012, (format it as mmmm if you just wish to see the month name), then in A2 and copied down add the function
=EOMONTH(A1,1)
