Have you tried setting the association for .pdf files?
Try right clicking on any .pdf file. From the menu, choose "Open with", select the program you use for reading .pdf files, and make sure you tick "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
I don't think there's a setting in Excel.

That's how my System is already configured.
If you've got another .pdf reader, why not uninstall Acrobat and see what happens. You can always re-install it.
I can't, it was installed by admin.
Then I guess you need to talk to your admin.
