VLook up for names - Names will be SLIGHTLY off though

    Hello all,

I have two different sets of data that contain similar names but they aren't all going to be exactly the same.

    Examples:
-One set of data has 'Dr. Sanjay Gupta' and the other has just 'Sanjay Gupta'
-One set has 'Jane and Dave Smith' the other has 'David Smith'

Probably a long shot, but is there anyway to marry the two? I would like to retrieve information from one set of data by looking for a particular persons name that is it the other set of data. Vlookup is what I was thinking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Since Excel can't derive context the way we can do instantly with examples like that, you'll have to decide ahead of time what method you will use to derive a "match". This will probably not be 100%, but could get most of them.

For instance, if the last name is always the last word in both strings, perhaps you can match off of just that? If the predominant number of strings have unique last names, that would work fine. You could even have a test to see if the last name matches more than one line in the other data and flag that for manual processing.

I can be more specific in examples if you post your actual workbook so we can see exactly how your data is laid out and what you want to occur when matches are found. Click GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to post up a copy of your workbook. Make sure the workbook demonstrates your desired results if possible, or just highlight the cells you're trying to fix. Use BEFORE/AFTER sheets if that helps make it clearer.
