I have created a picklist for a cell based on calculated values from other cells using data validation. I want to add an option for a user to enter his/her own value in the same cell if the calculated picklist options are not what they want. Using a blank cell in the picklist array does not work - cell will not accept any keyboard input from user, only picklist options. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The whole idea of data validation is to prevent entry of anything other than what is in a predefined list. what you want to do is to over-ride that restriction - either you have the restriction or you dont. without some form of VBA, the only other way i can think of is to allow them to add the new data to the list where the DV values are stored?

turn off the error alert for the data validation. then the user can enter what they like.

if at first you don't succeed try doing it the way your wife told you to
then apart from offering a list of predefined choices, why even bother to have it?
if you have some common entries, especially if they are long, it's quite user-friendly to provide those as a selectable list even when you'll accept any input. access databases do this often, usually with a method that adds new entries to the source table for next time.
